Before You Upload: A Privacy Checklist

Uploading an image may feel routine, but an ordinary photo can contain more information than expected. Before sharing anything with an online service, check the image, the people shown, the provider’s current privacy policy, and the choices available if you later want data removed.

Start with permission, not technology

The first question is not what a tool can do. It is whether you have the right to use the image. A real person’s likeness should only be used with that adult’s clear, informed, and specific agreement for the intended purpose. Public availability, a private message, a relationship, or previous access to a photo does not amount to consent.

Consent must also remain ongoing. If a person changes their mind or asks for an image to be removed, respect that decision. If permission is unclear, do not upload.

Check every person’s age

Never upload, request, create, possess, or share sexualized content involving anyone under 18. This includes edited, generated, fictionalized, or “aged-up” material. If there is any uncertainty about age, stop. Adult-only rules are a fundamental safety boundary, not a box to tick after the fact.

Look beyond the main subject

Background details can identify a person or place. Street signs, house numbers, school or workplace logos, vehicle plates, reflections, documents, screens, and distinctive rooms may reveal information that was not meant to be shared. Metadata may also include the device, time, or location associated with a file.

Removing unnecessary details can reduce exposure, but it does not eliminate every risk. The safest image is one you have the right to use and do not mind sharing under the provider’s stated conditions.

Read the provider’s current privacy policy

Look for practical answers: what files and account data are collected, why they are processed, how long they may be retained, whether they are shared with service providers, and how deletion requests work. Broad phrases such as “secure” or “private” are not enough without meaningful detail.

Understand retention and deletion separately

Retention describes how long information may be kept. Deletion describes what happens when an account or file is removed and whether backups or required records may remain. A service may explain one more clearly than the other. If the answer matters to you and the policy is unclear, ask the provider before uploading.

Use less information where possible

Avoid adding names, precise locations, contact details, account handles, or unrelated personal information unless it is genuinely necessary and you have permission. Do not send intimate images, identity documents, payment information, passwords, or other sensitive material to support unless an appropriate and verified process specifically requires it.

Know where to report a concern

Before using a service, see whether there is a visible route for privacy questions, account deletion, billing issues, or harmful content reports. If someone is threatening, blackmailing, or pressuring you, do not send money or more images. Preserve non-sensitive evidence, use the relevant platform’s reporting tools, and seek appropriate local help when necessary.

Pause when anything is unclear

A privacy checklist does not make an upload risk-free. Its purpose is to reveal unanswered questions before a decision becomes difficult to reverse. If age, permission, policy terms, data handling, or legality is uncertain, the responsible choice is not to proceed.
